Sugar cookies for Valentine's Day

While Grandmama usually made her sugar cookies big and round with a sprinkle of sugar on top, sometimes, when we baked the cookies together, she’d use this old heart-shaped cookie cutter that  Aunt Ina had given her. When I’d put the heart-shaped sugar cookies on a plate and bring them to Granddaddy, he’d pick and hold one of them cookies  up and say, “Now, that’s what I call cookin’ with a right smart of love.”

So, for this Valentine’s Day, make someone you love feel special and bake them some heart-shaped sugar cookies.  But make  sure to let them know that they were made especially for them and made  “with a right smart of love!”

TOTAL TIME

INGREDIENTS

2 sticks Butter

1 cup Sugar

1 teaspoon Vanilla

1 Egg (beaten)

3 cups Flour

1⁄2 teaspoon Salt

1 teaspoon Baking powder (only Rumford’s)

3 tablespoons Evaporated milk

Extra Granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cream together the butter, sugar, vanilla and egg.

  2. Add the flour and baking powder a little at a time, alternately with the evaporated milk. When it’s all mixed, it’ll look like a big ol’ gooey ball.

  3. Now, roll it out with a rolling pin or glass. (You might want to flour it so it won’t stick. It’s a pretty gooey batter.)

  4. For Valentine's Day, use a heart-shaped cookie cutter and place cut dough on a greased cookie pan.

  5. Bake at 350° F for about 8 to 10 minutes. (They should barely be turning brown on the edges. I like them soft!)

  6. Remove onto some wax paper or a sheet of foil and sprinkle with the granulated sugar while still hot. Yum! They’re great with coffee or tea!
